FEMININE CIRCLES

Pearls and microchips are the main feminine representations according to Christina Oiticica. One because they are a classical adornment, the other because it is circular, and not linear. Women already know plenty about pearls. But chips... "At this turn of the millennium, feminine energy is taking over. And that's because the computer chip has been created: circular thought has become linear," explains Christina. Technology has helped create the series of 30 pictures on show at the Centro Cultural Candido Mendes. "The computer has come to increment the arts. Copies and reproductions have become easier," she states. But nothing beats the artist's fascination for pearls. These are at the Centro de Artes Helio Oiticica, where Christina is putting on another exhibition: In "Stringing Pearls" she uses enormous sacks with sand and pearls, which look like cradles. "And their shadows on the wall form a landscape," she says. Christina also uses lace, veils, transparencies and angel's wings in her installation. Women's things. (D.S.)
